The silicone base is the half that does the gripping, and it's the half that wears. Suction depends on a clean, unmarked sealing edge, so a base that's been nicked or stretched may not hold the way it did when it was new.

Replacing it restores the grip without replacing the stainless steel insert, which almost never needs replacing.

It's also how you change the colour of a plate you already own — or keep a second base, so one can be drying while the other is in use.
